Ode to Stem Cells

After three full days with partners with Regenerative Outcomes, in Monday's early morning hours, these words came. Scientific discoveries in labs around the world are discovering unique little mechanisms called "stem cells" of various  sorts that can lead to prolonging life, easing pain, and enhancing one's quality of life. One of my strongest desires is for these treatments to be available to all of us and not just to those who can write a check. Tell me what you think about these words.

                                   Ode to Stem Cells

Pain is what I feel
From my head down to my toes
Everywhere I move
And nobody really knows.

This back is old
Somedays are worse than others
I feel it sometimes really bad
Sometimes I feel the shudders.

This pain down in my knees
I know I’m growing old
It’s worse some days than others
Especially when I’m cold.

Sometimes I can’t even feel
My toes nor even my fingers
So, I just sit and wait and wait
And the days turn into lingers.

The medicine I take
Only relieves me some
For a better day I’m longing
Before my time on earth is done.

Those pains no one really gets
No one can really see
The hurt my body feels
From my shoulders to my knee.

Sometimes I cannot breathe
Much more than just a gasp
These lungs are wearing out
Some day will be my last.

These eyes they cannot see
I used to could find my way
Now I fumble all about
Hardly sensing the light of day.

I hear there a new science
Going on in labs around the globe
If I only had the money
Perhaps I’d have more hope.

People like me want to see
People like me want to breathe
People like me have some hope
From our heads down to our knees.

They have many fancy names
Pluripotent mysenchymal stem cells
Snagged by patented devices
From my human body where they all dwell.

Gives people a lot of hope
Do you know some of them
Let’s pass the word and pray the prayers
And look for that little stem.

God’s grace is found
Upon all of us in sight
Let’s keep on doing good medicine
You know it’s really right.

Let’s make sure all of these treatments
Can make for a better story
For black and brown rich and poor
For God to receive the glory.

Moses Pharoah Here and Now

Delivered ole Moses
That bush was burnin’
He had a lot of doubt
But his soul was yearnin’.

The Promised Land
Was way down the road
He had his many doubts
His gifts a heavy  load.

Aaron was a mess
He was the older brother
And God used him
Like He did no other.

Those plagues were over the top
Why couldn’t Pharaoh see
He wasn’t gonna win that war
Despite Moses’ plea.

God hardened pharoah’s heart
That was part of the plan
We read in the good book
Still not sure I understand.

Those people followed Moses
Through the path with the water walls
But then they grumbled and murmured
Can’t you just hear those calls.

People are so fickle
When God they could trust
The human condition is there
Turn to God they must.

Who’re we like
Moses, Aaron or the people
When discomfort comes around
Let’s blame it on the leader.

We were enslavers
And now that we’re all free
Let’s trust in God’s leading
To take us farther’n we can see.

We’re inspired by Moses
God’s deliverance the plan
When we ponder all of the madness
Here upon the land.

Jim Crow lives in our hearts
That’s really plain to see
Our plans written on the land
Wicked plans so grievously.

Those people were shackled
Their bodies but not their minds
Let’s work for a better tomorrow
Leaving Jim Crow behind.

Which is worse
That land or this
Why you want to compare
They are both too amiss.

Egypt in the day
Jim Crow written down
Though the laws are changed
They lurk and still abound.

It’s easier to change the laws
Than to change people’s hearts
But call it what we must
From day light till dark.

Pharoah held them in chains
And here we call it lynchin’
We steal their land, their livin'
We rob their inner vision.

Deliver us, O Lord,
Like you used ole Moses
Before we’re more like Pharaoh
And start using again those nooses.

This is the land of free
The home of the brave
Soften our hearts
Toward us come and save.

Dear God Let Me Dream

Dear God
Let me dream
Give my mind permission
To tell the stories
Held within for these many years.

Dear God
Let me dream
Prompt me to see in pictures
The many tales
Tucked deep inside unspeakable.

Dear God
Let me dream
Perturb me to hear the sounds
That of too many words
Silent within my soul.

Dear God
Let me dream
Encourage my soul to face
The dark the damp the demons
From which I run.

Dear God
Let me dream
Walk into those stories
The way you walked
Alongside Moses and Aaron.

Dear God
Let me dream
For I am a man of unclean lips
A faltering tongue
Buoy my spirit and tell the tales.

Dear God
Let me dream
Piece together the fragments
Lost and gone hopes and anticipations
Encourage my heart to live with outstretched arms.

Dear God
Let me dream
And recall the hopes and expectations
Of better days and more hopeful times
Teach me to say hello to dreams fulfilled.

Dear God
Let me dream
Allow my imagination to take wings
To see brighter days and more hopeful futures
For all of your children, all of Your children.

Dear God
Let me dream
Allow me to see what you see
When hurts are healed and hearts comforted
Equality equity generosity near and far.

Dear God
Let me dream
Give me holy permission to relish
Hopes realized and wishes fulfilled
Justice and mercy arrived and welcomed.

Dear God
Let me dream
And replenish and restore this frail human being
Until night turns into morning
When sorrow turns into laughter.

Dear God
Let me dream
Bring upon us love and mercy
Grace and peace at every turn
When we all see all of us the way you see us.

Dear God
Let me dream

Collaboration: Join Up with Others!

This morning the notion of collaboration is both in my head and on my heart. From these two personal directions and from two arenas, the message is a personal one to me, and likewise it is to many of you.

Politically, partnering and collaborating is a must, in my opinion. As with you, I have my personal opinions about the nature of politics past, present, and future. While I will never abdicate my personal stances on things, and you will find some of those here on this page, I believe that we live in a time where we must join up with others who know how to create movements and mobilize people. So, please comment about that, and if you have joined any movements that advocate for causes important to you, please list them in the comments section. I will list several. I follow Dara Cooper and HEAL Food Alliance. You can find more information about Dara here. I am also prompted by her to pay attention to the Equal Justice Initiative. You can find it here.  She likes some folks who are near and dear to Charla and me. That counts in our book.

Those friends of Dara's who are friends of mine are found with the Black Farmers Agriculturalists & Association. You can find them hereOne of their causes that is important to me you can find here. JUSTICE FOR MATTHEW & FLORENZA is as near our hearts as you can get. Another you can find here. We have known Eddie and Dorothy for a long time, since probably 2005. Their cause breaks for my heart. Both of these causes are important. Please consider contributing to them.

Charla and I also have much interest this group and its concern for Syrian immigrants. See their important work here on FB and their home page. The SARA organization seems to be doing it right. Please check them out.

On a larger stage, I am following politically another group that is shaking things up out there.  It is moveon.org.  Check them out here.  Another group that I follow is Color of Change.  Check them out here.

Charla and I follow friends on FB who stir us to do well in our corners of the world. Some do wonderful photography, attend events, summarize the latest themes in our world, repost them, and all make me want to do better.

This post has gone on long enough.  So, I'll stop here. It goes without saying that we live in perilous times. Whether we are to the left, right, or middle, we tend to agree on that one. We all love things that matter, including our country.  We love it in different ways. We let our love show in different ways. It also goes without saying that those who know me, know that I am not prone to vitriolic explosions of whatever at whatever. I do what I do and I do it the way I have generally always done things.  I read, ponder, decide, write, and advocate.  It has dawned on me that I cannot do everything but I can do some thing(s). I will not fall into the morass of "my vote doesn't count" or "just get over it" or "give him/them a chance." When things matter, things matter, and I will not be left ten years from now, in my older age, wondering what I could have done differently.

My small voice can be heart amongst the chorus of other voices.

My small vote can be noted via the gathering of other voters.

My few words can be read when people choose, here on this page.

If you live, and you do, you matter; if you breathe, and you do, you matter; if you think, and you do, you matter; if you feel, and you do, you matter; if you are a lover of God and people, you matter; if you matter, then you can voice, vote, march, write, read, scatter seeds of goodness abroad, in whatever fields you choose to sew.

That I believe.  That is where I stand.

Morning Has Arrived

Morning Has Arrived

Morning light
Aroma of coffee
Sleep subsides
Ideas come
Covers release their captive
Adventure lies ahead
Life awaits I anticipate
Unsuspectingly I arise.

Truth is Truth

Truth is truth
No matter what they say
Come on let’s find it
Make for all a better day.

Truth is truth
Is not owned by just one side
Keep on searching
So we can all stem the tide.

Truth is truth
And some claim it so
It belongs to only them
Nobody else can know.

Truth is truth
And is not up for debate
Let’s get to finding it
Before it’s way too late.

Truth is truth
And can connect us one and all
Unless we want it for ourselves
And then we’ll all take the fall.

Truth is truth
No matter where it’s found
Some find it in the sky
Others in the ground.

Truth is truth
And sometimes found with logic
While others say not so
With other words to posit.

Truth is truth
For some found in a syllogism
As long as it stands the test of time
And is part of my algorithm.

Truth is truth
And is found in that vial of blood
It will stand the test of time
And has since that big bad flood.

Truth is truth
It’s found in human connection
As we all want to find it
No matter our complexion.

Truth is truth
And knows no exclusivities
It is there to be found
No matter our own proclivities.

Truth is truth
And will still be around
When we are all dead and gone
And buried in the ground.
